Huffman Slams Health Care Bill

Categories: Blog, News Headline | Author: Joe Mecca | Posted: 3/21/2010 | Views: 3195

Dan Huffman, the Republican candidate running for North Carolina's 13th Congressional District seat, reacted to today's passage of the health care reform bill, calling the legislation “a costly, regrettable and unprecedented burden on the American people.”

Never before has a piece of legislation of this scale been passed without broad, bipartisan support and overwhelming popularity with the American people.

This bill was extremely unpopular among voters and legislators alike, and between the new taxes and deficit spending, represents a threat to the fragile economic health of our nation.

The people want reform. I want reform. However, this Congress has gone about it in a completely backward fashion. The bill doesn't address the causes behind the high cost of care; it merely mandates that we address the symptoms. You can't require more bandages and go on ignoring whatever is causing the bleeding.

If I'm elected I'll work to have this bill repealed and will support legislation that takes a practical, attainable and fiscally responsible approach toward making quality health care coverage more accessible and affordable for all Americans.

This bill doesn't accomplish that; it does the opposite. In order to meet all the new requirements – particularly mandated coverage and level prices for high- and low-risk customers - insurers will have no choice but to raise premiums. Costs are going to skyrocket, possibly pricing families out of affordable coverage and into a situation where they'll be fined for not having it.

I'm not sure how you can call that reform.

Words of Wisdom

"The sacred rights of mankind are not to be rummaged for, among old parchments, or musty records. They are written, as with a sun beam, in the whole volume of human nature, by the hand of the divinity itself; and can never be erased or obscured by mortal power."

Alexander Hamilton; The Farmer Refuted, 1775
